Folksoc University of Southampton Folk Society

What is Folksoc? What do you do?

Hi! You seem to have stumbled across Folksoc, the home of folk music in the University of Southampton. We meet every week for folk sessions and put on a number of gigs and ceilidhs (barn dances) throughout the year. Never been to a ceilidh? Click here to see what they're like!

Sounds awesome. How do I join?

Just turn up and join in! We meet from 7pm - 9pm every Monday at building 2 to learn and play folk tunes, then generally head to the pub for a session. Anyone with any instrument with any ability is welcome, or even just bring your voice if you don't play anything (expect to be taught to play the spoons eventually, though).

What's coming up?

The start of a new year!

Come and meet us and find out about the society at the Bunfight in freshers week (Wednesday 27th September), whether you're a fresher coming to the university for the first time, or a returning student.

We'll open the year that night with our annual FREE Freshers' Ceilidh at 7:30pm in the Cube (bottom floor of the Union). Come along to have a dance, hear us play, everyone is welcome!

Our first session will be on Monday 2nd October. If you're not sure whether to come, come anyway and see what it's all about, then you can make an informed decision! Bring an instrument if you have one, or we'll give you something to make noises with if you don't.

Past Events

Last year Folksoc played throughout the year, such as our fantastic Freshers' ceilidh to kick off the year, charity ceilidhs raising money for Solent Mind and Trees for Life, socials for other societies, and gigs around the city. We played everywhere from a cruise ship to The Hobbit to street festivals to the Union.
